Anxiety

I've come to the conclusion that I suffer from anxiety. The last month or so, due to difficult circumstances in my life, my symptoms have reached their peak and it's taken a toll on my body. But there are ways to cope and gradually I'm finding things that help. I hope that this post can help someone, even if you only suffer mild symptoms. These ideas / actions have helped me:

1. I'm strong. No matter how I feel or think about myself, I am a strong person and I can get through this.

2. Worry doesn't get me anywhere. It's important to plan for the future but to go over all the negative possibilities in the mind eventually takes its toll on the mind and body and robs a person of their life.

3. Practising gratefulness is a good way to deal with anxiety and dark thoughts.

4. Being mindful and recognizing my negative thought patterns helps to stop them before they get out of hand and my body takes a downward spiral.

5. Exercise!! (I think this is honestly one of the best). I've just started running again and have to say it's one of the best things in the world! (Even if I only have time for about fifteen minutes.)

6. Self-care. Taking time every day - no matter how long my to-do list is - to do things that make me happy is vital. It's not selfish. It's about survival.

7. Believe. Having faith that God has my best interests at heart and that he is working things out is the only way I can cope. I have to surrender and stop trying to control everything. It's one of the scariest things in the whole world, but control comes from fear and fear doesn't open the way to good things.

If you've gone through anxiety at all, what has helped you to cope?

  1. Hi Kathy,
    Indeed.
Far too many people unfortunately suffer from anxiety and this is one of the most misunderstood 'conditions' - by this I mean, it's the biggest 'Mind Bluffer'!
    Why do I say this?
I've suffered from anxiety since 2006. Depression was a big part of it as well. Anxiety completely crippled me in a sense where I used beta-blockers to stop the adrenaline from burning my body from the inside. I had many physical symptoms due to the anxiety. Later on, it was at such a stage where my husband had to quit his job to look after me, because I couldn't cope without him. We have two primary children as well.
Not to go into too much details..yes, I completely understand what you are going through anxiety wise.
The thing that helped me the most was my husband's constant chanting of positivity. He helped me rewire my brainwaves. Force a smile when I didn't feel like it, etc.
The thing that helped me was sourcing the root problem what caused my anxiety. All the things you mention of how one can cope with anxiety are very good points.
Sourcing the root problem and then working your way through it...not around it. Family support is also very important. Healthy eating, exercise as you mentioned. Maybe a yoga class or something.
At the end of the day, our anxiety is created by fear. We need to face that fear within good timing and with baby steps, face that fear little by little.
I don't think of the future anymore. I literally focus on today. I have been anxiety free for a year now and it still is constant work to focus and not become fearful of things surrounding us or our circumstances.
Love your blogs - as always.
    Warm hugs,
    Ashleigh
