Who's Your Hero Herd Hops (and Giveaway)

Thanks to The Herd Presents blog hops, I'm taking part in the Who's Your Hero Blog Hop. Today, I want to share who my favourite book hero is. Firstly, I want to say there are many heroes to honour in real life, one of them being my brother-in-law who is the chairman of the Community Policing Forum in Durban. Although he doesn't wear a uniform, he's just as brave, if not more. I don't know of all the things he has to face up to in his job, but all I know is that he's doing a wonderful work in helping to combat crime in Durban where my family live.

Now for my favourite book hero. I have to say this is a very hard one for me. For many years, I would say Aslan was my favourite book hero - the cuddly, yet rather scary lion from the Narnia series. But lately, I've been enjoying the Harry Potter series. I don't often read children's books, but I've found these fantasy novels absolutely charming and gripping.

So, I'm going to choose a book hero from the Harry Potter books.

And Harry Potter it is. Yes, many people say that Professor Snape was the hero in the end, but well, I think he didn't warrant hero status because he was always quite mean to Harry throughout the books. Sure, maybe he had reason to, but it didn't bode well with me. And well, Dumbledore was a great mentor and role model for Harry. And Harry was a kid most of the time. But, Dumbledore didn't reach the ultimate hero status in my view.

I've just finished the fifth book in the series - The Order of the Phoenix - and I wanted to cry in parts. Just when I've been challenged by my editor to enter into a deep point of view in my writing, I thought of how much J.K. Rowling made me feel for Harry. How she took me right into his mind and made me want him to be happy with all my being. So, yes, even reading children's fantasy books has helped me learn a thing or two about writing. I don't think I'll ever be as talented as her, but I do feel challenged to make my readers feel more deeply for the things my book characters go through.

Anyway, back to hero status. I have to say, Harry clinches it for me. He sacrifices his life in the end for everyone. In fact, his whole life, even as a young kid, he's always sought to save and help others, despite being well-flawed like us all. Now, who doesn't need a book hero like that?

Funny that we're on the topic of book heroes and characters in books who work for the betterment of the world around us. My new release has such a character in it - Darryn Reeve, the wonderful private investigator who helps Carol recover her missing magic album.

Here's a bit of insight into who he is. I think he's just the type of guy to have on your side:

Looking up at Darryn, she spoke. “Are you coming with me?”
“To where?” His voice still sounded husky, drugged, lacking the usual alert guardedness. He hadn’t come down from their lust-induced stupor yet. She had, but she wanted him still. So badly. The reasons escaped her.
“Irene. She’s invited us over for lunch. Her grandson’s desperate. I don’t know what to do. She wouldn’t listen to me when I wanted to tell her The Album’s not working.”
“Maybe it will work with her.”
“I doubt it. I need to get to the shop before lunchtime tomorrow.”
“No.” He shook his head and collapsed onto the bed, resting his head in his hands. “We have to come up with another plan.”
Change of heart? Was he considering helping her? Her idea to reach out to him had worked. She should feel guilty, but the realisation that desire had been the greatest motivating factor in hugging him at the window assured her she hadn’t done something manipulative. Her heart squeezed at the thought of hurting Darryn, using him. That’s the last thing she wanted. “I don’t want you to get into trouble. Maybe you should return to South Africa. This isn’t your problem anymore.”
“No.” He jerked his head up. “I won’t leave you.”
“Darryn, it’s my problem now. It always was.”
“No.” He cleared his throat. “Even if you don’t hire me to help you, I’m still staying.”
“What about your business? Don’t you have other clients waiting for answers?”
He shrugged. “I can’t leave you.”
It was like he couldn’t think of any other words to describe what was in his heart. Something inside of her swirled with pain, a strange feeling. It hurt to be cared for so deeply. It hurt because she didn’t know if she could hang onto him or give back what he gave her.

Here's a blurb of the book:

The Magic of Love
The Album Book 3 - Carol’s Story

Carol is frantic as her ordered life has been flung into chaos. Pauline passed The Album onto her but it’s disappeared. She’s the one who’s looked forward to the magic the most; now she can't even use it. To top it off, she realises her boyfriend, Cliff, has disappeared with The Album. The sense of betrayal leaves her reeling.

She hires private investigator, Darryn, to help her find her missing treasure. Shocked at her inexplicable attraction to the man after coming out of a serious relationship, she’s reluctant to fly with him to Canada in search of the stolen artefact, but her need to find The Album burns strong.

In Canada, they soon discover that not only has Cliff stolen The Album, but also magic antiques belonging to other people from South Africa. They soon recover the artefact but, much to Carol’s disappointment, the magic is broken. Carol needs answers and is also burning to help the other antique owners—even if it means leaving her successful career and working with Darryn who has his own issues from his past.

How can Carol still have feelings for a man who keeps on breaking her heart? And will she fix the magic? What will she discover about herself, the magic, and love, while searching for the answers?

Excerpt:

Her heart seemed to have taken up interval sprints as a new sport since Cliff’s betrayal, and it chose that particular moment to do its workout. She shuddered and took in a deep breath to calm herself.
The man’s eyes softened and her tension eased a notch as she suspected he had compassion and wasn’t just a jaded investigator used to working with desperate and sometimes crazy individuals. Come to think of it, he seemed too cute to be behind a desk in an office block in town, surrounded by dusty files and one or two other reserved employees. Should have been gracing the pages of a magazine or at least in a corporate environment to stir up all the young women. Not that she’d ever gone for the pretty boy type. Or rather the ‘look at me, I’m God’s gift to women’ guys.
“Miss Barronse, are you okay? Did your boyfriend cheat on you?”
She shook her head. “Not in the sense that you probably think. He stole something valuable of mine and disappeared.”
“You say you haven’t seen him since yesterday?” She nodded, her heart flipping again. “I know it sounds crazy, but I’m convinced he stole it. He’s the only one who knew I had it besides my friends…”
He narrowed his eyes at her. To a stranger, her reasoning certainly didn’t make any sense. Sucking in a breath, she braced herself to tell him the truth about The Album. He had to know why she needed it back in her possession. What if he couldn’t be trusted, either?
“I’d like to sign a confidentially agreement with you first before I tell you exactly what Cliff Nel took.”
“We don’t normally do that. Our policy it to keep your privacy intact.”
“How can I trust you won’t steal the item, too?”
Anger flickered across his gaze, giving him a dark and broody look.
The guy sure was handsome. Working with him would be enjoyable, not that she could even consider a relationship at this stage in her life. If ever. Too bad the current day and age dictated it wasn’t as fashionable being a spinster anymore. She envisioned adopting at least five cats and sourcing a couple of exotic monitor lizards and spending the rest of her life alone in her house, doing whatever she liked and being crazy about neatness and punctuality, just the way she wanted to be without anyone interfering in her lifestyle. No guy telling her to loosen up or make space for his clutter, or saying she needed to spend money on frivolous things. Wanting to cut into her savings and spend all her money—
“It will be nine hundred rand per hour.”
“What?” She coughed and swallowed a big lump in her throat. “It won’t take you long to find him, will it?”
So much for all her savings, having money freedom, and no worries for the future.
“It all depends. I can’t say. It could take from two days up to several weeks.”
“What?” She did a quick calculation. Not pretty.
His lips curled up in a sardonic smile. She wanted to punch the glee from his face and make those straight teeth skew. Fisting her hands, she bit her lip instead and took several calming breaths.
“So, on top of losing my most valuable possession and a long-term relationship, you expect me to blow away my savings from the last few years, as well?”
“It’s the going rate.” He didn’t seem perturbed by her rude outburst.
“What about the man in the street, Mr. um… Mr….” She searched her memories and the wall behind him for some clue to his name.
In all the panic, she’d forgotten his name. She’d always prided herself on a faultless memory, in fact photogenic, as many people called it. What was wrong with her?
“Mr. Darryn Reeve.”
“Mr. Reeve, don’t you care about the everyday person?”
He laughed. “My sentiments exactly.”
“What?”
“You seem to say that a lot, Miss Barronse. I’m the everyday person and I need to make a living, pay rent, pay staff, keep the office running. But why am I appealing to an accountant? You should know those things.”
How did he know she was an accountant? She hadn’t given him any information about herself. He had been tapping away on his keyboard while talking with her. Had he already checked up on her? It should make her angry that he’d chosen to do that, but instead, it impressed her socks off. How subtle and how professional. It could mean he’d find Cliff fast.

Still in the Thick of It

I don't know if you read my previous post about writer's burnout?

Well, I listed all the reasons why I'm grateful for it.

Phew, have I been tested with regards to being positive through this. I'd really assumed my writer's burnout was nearly over. Little did I realise I had probably only touched the tip of it.

At the moment, these are my survival mechanisms:

1. I don't do any marketing. I just can't seem to get myself to do it. I feel sick inside at the thought of organising blog tours, tweeting on twitter, posting excerpts and pushing, pushing, pushing. So I'm sticking to the bare bones - blogging a bit and writing a few paragraphs or pages a day or every third day.

2. Spending lots of time alone and doing spiritual practices which feed my soul and nourish me.

3. Reading a lot and loving it.

4. Trying not to feel guilty and unproductive - I tell myself that it's just a phase and it will pass. Yet...

5. Coming to the conclusion that maybe I may not be so big into writing ever again in my life and that's okay.

6. Every time I wonder whether I should even go to the Writer's Conference this year, I remind myself that it will probably refuel and re-inspire me.

7. Facing up to the real reasons I wrote in the past: Sure I did it because I loved it but I also hoped to make some money out of it. I don't know if I'm ever going to make money out of it and I need to come to terms with that. That's made me only write because I want to and have a story to tell. If something comes of it financially, it will just be a surprise and a bonus. Yeah, I know, I suck at the law of attraction!

8. I can't even fathom doing a writer's course or reading books on craft. The thought doesn't inspire but only exhausts me. I'd much rather do other courses on something else I'm interested in. Therefore, I'm sticking to just writing and nothing else. Maybe not wise, but survival is it. I have to keep the flame alive somehow.

9. Telling myself that even if I write two paragraphs on a day, at least I've done something.

10. Listen to lots of music. And sing along.

11. Reminding myself that I have a book coming out soon and should really be excited about it. All I can think of is all the work involved. But it's a good thing, as now I'll be able to put my Album 1 on for perma-free which may just be the means to the breakthrough.

12. Wanting to get a contract for some stories that I sent off but dreading the work that it involves. But at least it's something. I hope I get positive responses.

About the Book:

Beth Dodd has made a promise to help “Lulu”, a young prostitute at the Blue  Feather, keep her baby if she decides to leave the whorehouse and become a respectable woman. But Beth hadn’t counted on the obstacles she and the new mother will face from society in the mining town of
Lundy. From the obstinate landlady, Mrs. Ford, to her intractable German boss,
Gus Herschel, Beth must fight for the woman she’s promised to help. But Beth
Dodd never gives in, and she keeps her word with a stubbornness that Lundy folks
are not accustomed to seeing from a woman.

Once Lulu, now known as the more respectable Louisa Parmley, starts working for Gus in his kitchen, she proves that Beth was right to take a chance on her. She has every intention of making a good life for her new daughter. But can she
also hope to find happiness with Gus? And will Gus be able to accept her and
baby Sophie Ann as his? Love was never in the cards for Gus, but Louisa dreams of happiness with the stoic man, and Beth is determined to bring them together through HER INDEPENDENT SPIRIT.

Excerpt #1:

Albert, the muscle Miss Flora hired to enforce order in the brothel entered the room holding what appeared to be a small folded bundle of flannel. “Miss Lulu, this is for your baby.”
“Who would bring the baby a gift? Not that many people know me let alone know I have a baby.”
Bewildered, Lulu reached for one edge of the fabric and shook it free of its folds. One side was solid white flannel. The other side had a checkerboard patchwork design of striped blue blocks and red flannel blocks alternating with white flannel blocks. It was a quilt with a thin fabric center instead of heavier
cotton filling. It was not the most artfully designed quilt Lulu had ever seen,
but the corners of the squares matched up and the stitches that held all the
layers together were neat and even.

“It was the midwife. She said no matter what, baby Sophie Ann needs a blanket.”
“The midwife! She brought the baby a blanket?”
Lulu recalled the woman, Jim Dodd’s widow, not much older than she was, who had come to help with the birth of Sophie Ann. That day she had offered to help Lulu get work as a cook so she could keep Sophie Ann but only if Lulu gave up being a prostitute and be the one to walk away from the Blue Feather. Had she said that just to be nice, or had she meant what she said?
“Oh, Albert! Where is she? I need to talk to her.”
